Kayaking the Edmonds Marina Breakwater

ETC took a little trip aboard Kingsley last weekend, North from Shilshole to stay the night at the Edmonds Marina in Edmonds, Washington. We brought our two Innova Safari kayaks on deck and set out to explore the Edmonds marina and breakwater.

First, breakfast on the new grill...ok, newer grill.
P.S. - the cast iron keeps the grease and liquid out of the fire (the drip pan is small and shallow, the grill is hard to clean without taking the whole thing apart, & the cast iron stays warm after the fire is out so you can cook on low...because the grill doesn't really do low).

I usually add the sailor flotation/seat cushions to my Safaris since the water is cold and some of my kayakers are a little over the weight limit (me) on these guys (water comes in and out the self-bailing holes).

Paddling next to the snow covered breakwater! Actually, that's bird poop.

Not a bad little paddle. The marina is a lot smaller (actual size and number of boats) than Shilshole but has some really cool boats. The entrance, at least in the summer, can get a little busy with pleasure and fishing boats so paddlers should be careful. Although we launched off the back of Kingsley as marina guests, anyone could put in close to the marina - there are beaches on the North and South ends (see map below).

Hi there, we are visiting the parents in Edmonds and have a 15 yr old who would love to explore the area on kayak, but i'm nervous about tides, etc. Any easy little closeto-shore jaunts you could recommend? My parents are about a mile north of the Edmonds marina. I've always been interested in kayaking from there heading north. There are a couple of beaches and piers to explore. But as a river canoer and every so often calm water kayaker I'm a little clueless. we come from Bouilder CO.
Thanks for any info you can give....Vicki

Vicki,
You're smart to be a touch nervous! The waters here in the Northwest are chilly, they can kill all year round. We also have some pretty extreme tides depending on where you're from - we swing plus or minus 10 feet-ish twice a day (ish). Add some wind (ours usually blows from the North or the South, which means you'll likely have to battle it one way) and well, it can get dicey pretty quick, especially traveling solo.
Anyway, travel with a partner, wear a pfd and a dry suit if you have access to one, check the weather/tides/currents, take water/food/etc. Staying close to shore can help - and paddling lakes (like lake Washington) are warmer and you don't have to worry about tides.
We haven't paddled much North of Edmonds but there is a great concrete facility thingy South of the marina, round trip probably only an hour & 1/2 or 2. Click on the Edmonds link in our categories to the right on this blog. Have fun-be safe - When I was 15 I was running around in the woods in Missouri - now I live on a sailboat!
