Kayak Richmond Beach to Edmonds, WA

The club knocked out another little paddle - from Richmond Beach to Edmonds Washington (and back). The paddle is about one to two leisurely hours one-way. It's nice to start at Richmond Beach in Shoreline and head north - that way you can stop for refreshments halfway when you get to Edmonds. Once you arrive there is a great public beach, dog park, bathrooms, the Edmonds marina (pictured at the end of this post), restaurants, ice cream (mmm ice cream), and more. Watch the tides/wind - it took us almost two hours to get there and only 45 mins to an hour to get back (without almost no wind). The paddle takes you through my favorite photogenic asphalt plant on the water at Point Wells. Check out these pics and our previous post on the area!

John and Paul,

How does the Helios II paddle as a single? I have two Safaris and a Sunny, but was thinking about getting the Helios II for the decks, rudder, and carrying capacity. Looks like you've got a Sunny now as well?

Love the blog!

Jason - Paddling the Helios II as a single is my go-to set-up these days. I find that paddling by myself I don't need a rudder (the optional one sold separate).
However, the first time I paddled it as a double with someone up front I knew I needed something (rudder) because it was hard to keep her on track (the rudder solved the problem). The foot pedal steering took a little getting used to, but no problem after a little practice.
Over the years I've found that using the rudder while kayak-sailing or sneaking up to photograph wildlife is super helpful.
Otherwise - the storage is great, the platform in the middle of the kayak is perfect for attaching a sail, the ropes along the outside have come in handy more than once, and my Helios II has lasted forever.
The new Swing II is pretty sweet too, maybe worth a look...thanks for your comment - glad you enjoy the blog!

P.S. - Jason - No Sunny for me - my good friend just picked one up so I have been showing her the ropes!
